Flamenco dancingSpain’s Costa Blanca was probably where the British love affair with Spanish holidays first took root. Families first enjoyed the White Coast on Spain’s eastern seaboard through resort areas such as Benidorm, Javea, Alicante and Denia but since the 1970s British families – as property owners and holidaymakers – have been on a voyage of discovery there, finding out that there is much more to the Costa Blanca than busy resorts. The Costa Blanca has many uncrowded beach areas and exploring with a rented car reveals places such as Arenales del Sol, Santiago de la Ribera and Villajoyosa for their warm seas, safe beaches and water sports. Excursions inland discover the true history and culture of the coast and places such as Guadalest, a mountain village accessible in the final stages of the climb only by foot or by hitching a lift on a donkey. A recent addition to the coast has been the Terra Mitica theme park near Benidorm. Historically themed, it has white-knuckle rides, roller coasters, picnic areas and loads of activities for kids. Benidorm still remains a big draw for itMap of the Costa Blancas extensive beaches, shops, restaurants, bars, clubs and colourful festivals.
