Gran Canaria has a wonderful variety in landscapes and excellent beaches, including the Saharan dunes of Maspalomas.
The biggest, brashest resort here is Playa del Ingles, with plenty of commercial centres from which to choose, that cater for all tastes. It also has a great beach with excellent amenities – great for families and youngsters. You can take a trip from here to Perla Canaria and choose your own pearls from the oyster tank – a great souvenir of the area
Neighbouring Maspalomas is a different story - a delightful area where you can enjoy relaxing days on the beach, which extends out to a grass fringed lagoon. Beyond, are the rolling dunes, for which this area is famous.
Gran Canaria’s Capital is Las Palmas, which has good bars and restaurants and interesting shops to explore. The magnificent Cathedral of Santa Ana can be found in the old town. Nearby, Golfer’s can enjoy the oldest course in Spain – Las Palmas.
One of the quieter resorts is San Augustin, with a secluded beach and clear waters. This is an upmarket resort and home to the Island’s most prestigious hotels. There is a fabulous floorshow in its casino – well worth a visit.
Other resorts include Tauro and Peurto de Mogan, which offer a lovely range of sea and golf villas to stay in.
Getting out and about, there is plenty to do. Sioux City is an imaginative reconstruction of how the west was won – where duels are shot out. Palmitos Park bird sanctuary has a colourful range of parrots to adore and the Tara caves are worth a visit too.
